How I Got Published: Step Eight - Rejection

Rejection is part of the business. Many people don’t get published because they get rejected once and immediately give up. The ones that do get published don’t give up. Some people procrastinate querying because they are afraid to be rejected after all their hard work. I say, don’t give yourself any regrets. You’ll never know unless you try. Besides, the market is always changing. Your book may not be right at the moment, but it may be perfect in a year or two. It is a matter of the market being in the right place for your story.

After several rejections, we’re talking at least 50, you may need to take a good look at your work and see if it needs fixing. Most of the rejections are generic form comments. But sometimes you get that precious personal comment that gives you clues on how to make your writing better, sometimes known as a champagne rejection. That means you're getting close. Take their comments seriously.

An agent may ask to see more of your work. They want to see that you are a dedicated writer who will turn out consistent quality. So, you need to be prepared and have at least three other picture books completed.

I say query, query, query, and forget about it. Put it in the hands of the universe and go have a nice lunch. Following that up by doing something motivating and inspiring. Write another book, join a webinar or workshop, find a mentorship, contest, or editor.

There are lots of agents out there. Just keep querying. Don’t give up!
