How I Got Published: Step Nine - Social Media

Where do I begin? There is so much I am still learning. Like many writers, I’m quite the introvert so social media is a nightmare. I was told over and over to just do what is comfortable for me. Well, none of it is! So, like having to learn anything big, I’m doing it one step at a time.

I started by making a website and I’m so glad I did. Agents and Publishers want to see you are serious. Plus, that’s how people can find and research you. It’s your opportunity to let the world know about you. You’ll need it. It’s best to do it now.

Then I joined all the social media I thought would be good. Agents will often have a section in Query Manager that asks for your Twitter, Bluesky, and Instagram handles, so have it ready. It takes a while to build up followers, so, get started now. I clicked on anyone who was a good fit. Follow people who are in the business, such as authors, editors, publishers, writers, and especially agents. Get to know them. Plus, this is where they announce contests, pitch-a-thons, webinars, books, workshops, etc.

You will want to have a good-sized following before you publish a book. I heard once that a publisher liked a book but because the writer didn’t have a big enough following, they passed. Tragic!

When you do get published, you will use a lot of social media. You may as well dip your toe in the water now.

Podcasts are also great. You can reach out to them and make a pitch.

And yes, do a blog!
